feedback

I pitched my story to my group various feedbacks was given which included a lot of positive points; the theme was based on drama romance and esma and noriane managed to guess the theme which was good due to the story being straight forward and easy to understand. After I had pitched the story to them, I then ask esma to pitch my story back to me to see how well she understood my story.

7. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
Preliminary Brief: the task of shooting a two minute sequence film and in this we were assigned two cast; Yasmin and Edward and also to use film terminology and independent filming for example continuity, shot reverse shot and the 180 degree rule. We started off by story boarding our simple idea of a boyfriend who upsets the girlfriend and eventually break up.
i feel i have progressed in many ways where i managed to identify my mistakes and make changes for the main task and improve.
The first stage was PRE PRODUCTION. This was all the planning and research before filming. For the preliminary task this was simple as we only had a short time to film and therefore we did not have time to plan too much. Although it was short it still showed me roughly how it would be when it came to the main task. For the pre production we had to make
- A shooting schedule
- A storyboard
- A script
we had a good shooting schedule
Prelim evaluation
In the prelim task, Rebecca and I got given a task of shooting a two minute sequence film and in this we were assigned two cast; Yasmin and Edward and also to use film terminology and independent filming for example continuity, shot reverse shot and the 180 degree rule. We started off by story boarding our simple idea of a boyfriend who upsets the girlfriend and eventually break up. Rebecca and decided to organise a time for us to meet up over the weekend to finish our storyboard whilst exchanging each others mobile phone numbers this helped due to when Saturday came we face no problems with meeting because we had great communication skills.

We were given a shooting schedule which would help us to include continuity which was equally very important to the filming so that when it came to editing the film would flow, also we had a continuity sheet which enabled us to keep our good and bad shots organised. After contemplating about whether the shooting schedule would be helpful we decide to keep each shot in order as we automatically organised our storyboard without noticing. Rebecca and I decided to situate our location recce within the corridor and the stairs as in our main task we prefferred to use more private locations, as we explained our story to Yasmin and Edward we also gave them a script which was straight forward this contrasts with our main task because we were given more time and planned better as we held rehearsals for our cast, in the prelim task we could have improved our explanantion of the script by adding directions and frame positioning this would have saved a lot of time between Rebecca and I and our cast and also given them more time for rehearsal so this would have saved even more time due to where we had to corporate time between two groups as Yasmin and Edward filmed before us which ran into our time which we wasn’t prepared for and felt rushed. As a group overall we worked well together because each individual was dedicated this includes the prelim and main task, one of our weaknesses within the prelim task was that we needed more rehersal time, this would have saved alot of time and instead of concertrating on the script and shots we could have made the shooting schedule alot more detailed which we purposely tried to avoid in the main task.

For the shooting of the prelim task we used a XH A1 camera to shoot our prelim task which we were taught how to use in previous lessons this included adjusting the tripod to the right height, then secure the camera onto the tripod and also adjust the spirit level this made the camera accurate and straight.then inserted the battery and tape then eventually switched the camera on.the prelim task has developed my production skills in many ways an example of this would be we had to be aware of our cast positioning and still include continuity additionally we kept the same props i also relised as an individual that oraganisational skills were just as important and technical skills which i hope to use a equal balance of each in my next film task, the prelim task also included independent filming being able to express our creativity within our work which was practical, for example we used a pan in one shot when yasmin walks through the door and edward follows behind, this was hard due to using a stair case and keeping both charathers within the frame, we over came this problem by using levels and using zoom to capture the close up shots this also helped capture the characters facial expressions which was very important when using shot reverse shot.

i think our short film appeals to people who watch soap operas and as for age would appeal to any viewer that is aware or interested of conflict within relationships. An example of this would be when edward sits down on the stairs with his hands on his head this creates tension for the audience and gives the feeling of failure which draws our scene to a close, this could be compared to eastenders such as it will never end and towards the end something always interesting happens which is called a cliff hanger.the short film would come under the romantic genre as it involves a couple. As for the main task our opening sequence appeals to people who watch horror/thiller films as for the viewers enjoy watching these to specific genres. An example of this is when bianca looks down at the sink and the quicky looks up, this shows that something is about to happen which is also called a cliff hanger.

Editing
In class we were shown how to use the new editing programme, Firstly we started off by plugging our camera into the computer using a usb cable the inserting the tape we used to film our prelim task. Then we plugged in the lacie drive which is basically a large memory card, the next step was to load the editing programme and go to file then scrool down to capture, this is where we was able to record each scene so that we would no longer need to plug in the camera which makes it easier for future editing also made editing easier due to being able to add headings to each scene which organised our work. After recording the next step was to playback all the scenes and see which ones included continuity and also included the shots we initially involed.

The problems we faced with editing?
rebecca and i found the editing programme straight forward and easy to use althrough we struggled to invole continuity but still include naturalism we overcame this by shortening our scenes this mage the shots not look so practiced and obvious that the cast were being directed. Another problem we faced was that everytime we had edited a scene and drag onto the time line one scene would over write another, We also overcame this by spacing each scene out and pressing the shift button on our keyboard. Due to this being rebecca and my first time editing i think we did a good job and manage to complete our independent film with success with a few minor delays.

As for engaging our audience our intial thoughts was to think what would we like to watch which is short and simple but still interesting so we refered to an everyday life dilemma which would hopefully relate to alot of our viewers.
Main task.

Editing.
In the main task we were limited with time thats why it was very important to organise every step. When it came to editing day we captured the good shots which the continuity sheet helped us to identify each ahot and whether we need them or not this saved time and confusion. Then began to assemble our film which took a hour this is due to having previous lesson where i had learnt how to use the editing programme. Then we cut and made any changes to make the film look good and also included titles.

The problems we faced with editing?
The problems we face were due to opinion and whether the audiences intial thoughts was whether our film respresent the horror/thriller film as when we was editing we realised that the shot of bianca and the black figure in the mirror wasn’t very scarey we realised how to overcome this problem by finding a sound track which created a scarey vibe.

As for engaging our audience for the main task our initial thoughts was to look at what we did wrong in the prelim task for example in the prelim task our location reece did not work well due to being a busy public place where people needed to use, So for the main task we tried to avoid this by booking private rooms within school where we could not be disturbed i.e. class room and toilet and where we could not avoid using some public places we chose to use our time wisely and shot when all students were in lessons, this is shown when bianca walks to the toilet.

6. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
Throughout the process of constructing this product i have gain a lot of experience within technologies.
Previous lesson we prepared for our main task by the experience of the prelim task and also learning how to set up and use technologies for example camera and sound, this is so that when it came to the actually filming day we knew how to set up the equipment correct and quick, also camera and sound people were given a master class where they could become familiar with anything that they may have forgotten about.
We used:
- A Canon XH A1, we learnt how to operate the camera such as putting the battery and tape into the camera in the right places, and identify the on and off switch and also the zoom button.

-First i started off by taking the tripod out of the tripod bag, then separating the three stands and then unscrew each six points on the tripod and adjust it to should height level.
- Then we had to attach the camera to the tripod, after doing so we adjust the spirit level this is so the camera is straight.

- We used an external microphone; although we did not need any natural sound we still used it just in case we needed it when it came to editing.

Whenever we changed location we had to pack up the equipment and check that everything is in its right place this is to make sure that none of the equipment is damaged, this relates to our filming day where it was raining and we had to go outside to get to our second location by packing up the equipment protected the camera and sound from having any water interference. The equipment was quite hard to transport between the three of us so we got our cast to help us with the weight of the equipment this created a less chance of any equipment being damaged.
As we were shooting on location we realised that the location we had chosen interfered with the sound, but after realised we no longer need the sound equipment due to using music which was non diagetic sound when editing.
After filming for one day and getting all the shots we needed, we had to start editing to assemble the sequence.

- We used Adobe Premier Pro for editing our film
- After cutting out all the bits that were not needed by the razor tool, we had to look the right music that would suit our film this helped by previous research on copy right free music. We had a couple of problems with this because we had to change the music many times because after audience feedback we would realise that those types of music were not right for our theme, after many tries the majority of our audience feedback was good as they liked the music and they thought it went with the film, however there were still some people that did not like the music, but we realised that no matter how many times we tried we could not please everyone.
As we finished everything we watched our sequence which included the copy write music, camera shots and titles altogether worked well and we were very pleased with our final product.
The experience as a whole i now feel confident with using camera and sound equipment, as this was my first time i weren’t familiar with all the technologies and now proud to say that i can identify and set up the equipment without needing any help.

-First i started off by taking the tripod out of the tripod bag, then separating the three stands and then unscrew each six points on the tripod and adjust it to should height level. We used this in our film mainly to capture a steady shot or a slow camera pan, this is seen when bianca stands up as we pan up from her sitting to standing. I learnt through editing to take more single safety shots this would have been useful when it came to editing, i aslo learnt that certain shots we captured weren’t nessercary but was help ful when it came to editing as some images on our storyboard were replaced with others.

part 5

5. How did you attract/address your audience?
Our group discussed and decide whether our main theme should just classify as horror or combine two themes and make our film a horror and thriller, after researching teen horrors and teen thrillers this worked well therefore due to the success of our researched film challenged and changed some convention as the chosen themes work well with our target audience therefore will become successful. We also wanted to keep the film as realistic as possible as this would create tension and have a big impact on the audience, this is seen when Bianca is walking towards the toilet we show various shot like a over the shoulder medium close-up shot this creates tension because it gives the audience a sense that someone is watching, this is because normally when someone is walking you would view a point of view shot this makes the audience feel safe and secure because the audience is in the world of the film which is in contrast with the over the shoulder shot because usually the camera is not with the character but is show a different profile instead of showing the front profile you see the back this makes the audience feel lost and confused to what is going on and also leaves them wanting to know the unknown.

The first character we see is the geek girl as the camera pans across showing her sitting down minding her own business doing her work she also looks distressed due to the unfamiliar environment as a geek not being used to detention. Next the camera continues to pan and we use a slow zoom into the shot of the basket ball player rolling his basket ball back and forth while reading the news paper his purpose was to waste time and keep himself occupied by not having to mix with the other social groups.
As the camera continues to pan the camera slowly zooms out and goes into the frame of the Goth and the class clown, this is where we really do see a sense of character as the class clown continuously pokes the Goth in the arm for his own amusement, as the Goth struggles to fight of the class clown and tries to block him out. Following on the camera cuts away to a shot of a table with a piece of paper placed in the centre as the camera pans up slowly you notice drops of blood landing on the paper, this is effective because this makes the audience panic and makes them want to watch more and also keeps them hooked.
As we continue to pan up Bianca appears within the frame where we see her reaching towards her bag and grabs a tissue as we see within the next three seconds her holding the tissue on her nose while by tilting her head back this suggest that the blood from the previous shot was due to her having a nose bleed this is significant because blood represents the theme of horror and also thriller this address our audience because our primary audience already have an idea that a death is going to occur very soon.
As she tilts her head back we see a long shot of her standing up and walking towards the door where we see a close up of Bianca hand pressing on the wall and leaves a finger prints of blood and also a wide shot this is because we see the whole class with more than one thing happening. As she opens the door we see a long shot of the for and then her opening the door then followed by a medium shot of her holding the tissue on her nose and tilting her head back, then a long shot of her full body from behind and then a medium shot of her feet and then a long shot of her turning into the toilet these sequence of shots show a variety of camera shot which work well together.
We then see the girl walking in to the toilet and washing her face. She bends down and washes her face, she then looks in to the mirror at herself, then she bends down again, and this time the audience see a black figure behind her, when the figure appears there is a sudden loud music in the background, this attracts the target audience because it scares them and they would want to know what is going to happen next. Then the popular girl looks up again and she too sees him then she slowly turns around and that it when the credits come up and we see the name on the film. This attracts the target audience because it creates suspense and they would want to know what will happen to the popular girl and therefore they will want to see the rest of the film.

4. Who would be the audience for your media product?
As a group we decided to make our primary target audience appeals to both genders males and females aged between 16-25years old because our film characters a quite young which make our film a teen horror/thriller and also we have an advantage due to our age range are the most like age to attend the cinemas on a regular basis and Of all ethnicities, but mainly British audiences as it is more familiar to them due to the language barrier. Our initial thought was that our target audience would be males because usually horror movies seem to attract the male audience more than females, hence females would also watch it because they could relate to the characters in our film. Our target audience would have previously seen movies such as Friday the 13th this is similar to our movie because of the representation of the characters age, and also may have viewed movies such as paranormal activity and orphan as the fall into the same genre as Deadly sins, our target audience would most probably had interest or seen the movie this is due to all the movies belonging to the horror theme. Our
Our target audience would have seen films such as Final Destination because all of the people there get killed , and similar to our film there are scary clues to predict what will happen but although they do not give too much of the film away. The target audience would have also seen films such as I Know What You Did Last Summer because that is a horror film and people get killed in it. They would have also watched films such as Halloween because a lot of people get killed and there are no reasons for the deaths but they just happen.
Another film that our target audience would have watched is Prom Night because it is a teen horror and similar to our film people get killed.
Another comparrison of a film that our chosen target audience would watch would me “the texas chainsaw massacre” this is because they share similar plot keywords i.e. blood splater, serial killer which appears a various amounts of times in “the texas chainsaw massacre” and also in our film “deadly sins” and also due to our film “deadly sins” being similar to “the texas chainsaw massacre” this benefits us due to seeing the success and progress of the films where they brought out many remakes.

3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
Our film is a low budget it’s unlikely to achieve a place for viewings in large chain cinemas. It is not really blockbuster material due to our equipment not being up to block buster standards. It is therefore likely to be distributed on a much smaller scale. It would struggle because the audiences will not familiar with our film because of the financial side of distribution.
A distribution company that may distribute our film would be http://ossuary.best-horror-movies.com/ this is because they specialise in horror and thriller films for distripution and as “deadly sins is classified as a horror/thiller i identified that our film would benefit from best-horror-movies as they are extremely intrested in distributing horror/thiller films. Also shown on there website a wide range of independent film distributors that also share the same theme horror/thiller. We are a http://ossuary.best-horror-movies.com/ quote “We are a crew of guys and girls that LOVE horror movies, LOVE to talk about them, and have a way (through this site) to share our passion and enthusiasm for the genre with the world!” this is a great way of distributing “deadly sin” due to http://ossuary.best-horror-movies.com/ targeting our target audience because anyone who visits this website obviously shares the same desire to watch horror/thiller films.

Another distribution company that may distribute our film would be http://www.coffeefilms.com/content.html They specifie in thiller films this also benefits our genre as we are meeting our primary viewer wants and needs coffeefilms quote “Well into our second decade we're currently developing and producing a slate of exciting feature length projects including The Death and Resurrection Show on the influential post-punk/industrial band Killing Joke, Lucid a psychological drama/thriller” Their aim of this approach is to trigger change and get people to take action. And there best way to do this, is by making the film available at cinemas and venues around the country.
Distribution is the final stage and plays an important role since the introduction of DV technology; the means of production have become more democratized. Filmmakers can shoot and edit a film, create and edit the sound and music, and mix the final cut on a home computer. Most independent filmmakers rely on film festivals and thanks toindependent film distributors which allows their films noticed and sold for distribution. Although there is little profitability in this, a filmmaker can still gain exposure via the web.
Also another film distributor is film specific http://www.filmspecific.com they provide distribution school for beginner’s a course in independent film .they are one of 50 best websites for movie makers. Film Specific focus exclusively on educating filmmakers and content producers about the complex and often misunderstood world of independent film and program distribution and gives them the tools and resources they need to compete effectively in a tough marketplace. They break down the barriers by connecting filmmakers directly with distributors for their films through their exclusive Audio Seminar series with actual independent film distributors and international sales agents, buyers lists, sales agency and distributors databases, case studies, our article and interview series.

part 2

2.
The key characters of my film are the popular girl who we focus on mainly within the opening sequence her sense of character is the typical shallow, intimidating, selfish, spoilt brat who only cares about one thing and that’s herself she is wears a pink top and a skirt the colour pink shows that she is very girly the skirt she wear is rather short which suggests that she is an attention seeker, she is similar to “Jennifer check” played by Megan fox in “Jennifer’s body” who is also very powerful and bossy but also a contrast as “Jennifer” is the villan and “Bianca” is the victim this is important to the story because it makes the audience engaged and makes them want to watch the whole movie which make a successful movie. However we do also see the geek (girl) where don’t really get to see the representation of character except for the stereotypical mise en scene e.g. reading glasses, piles of books, a pencil case, hair tied back in a neat plat, smartly dressed with a simple white shirt and black trousers this suggest that the character had a very little significance within the opening sequence which she causes the disruption towards the middle of the film, also within the first scene individual medium close up shots the geek girl is shown first which also gives hints that she is also going to be the last person standing which makes her significant, i compared this to one of my researched movies “Prom night” Donnas senior prom is supposed to be the best night of her life, one of magic, beauty, and love. Surrounded by her best friends, she should be safe from the horrors of her past. But when the night turns from magic to murder there is only one man who could be responsible, the man she thought was gone forever. Now, But the psychopath Richard has escaped from prison, stabbing her friends and staff of the hotel that cross his path. The similarities of “Deadly sins” film and “prom night” they share the same themes horror/thriller and also included mystery which is also important within “Deadly sin” due to the unrelated killings. The representation of the main character donna in “prom night” is that she had suffered a lot in the past and is recovering for being deceived and stalked this also compares to “Deadly sin” due to the characters not aware to what is next about to happen. We also have a Goth (boy) who also could represent stereotypically be the prime suspect to being the villan due to his heavy dark black eye liner this is similar to the film “halloween”as they use mise en scene to enhance the representation of each character, black clothing and rather large head phones. He comes across as a very closed person but still manages to attract attention but in the wrong way due to his appearance this is shown in the first scene when the camera pans across the classroom and show a medium close up of the Goth (boy) sitting next to the class clown who is constantly poking him, the Goths facial expression look frustrated and fed up as if he wants to leave. As for the class clown who is chewing gun while trying to disrupt eveyone is seen as the guy that people either love or hate his social status is quite high this is because of his own insecurities which he chooses to hide by taking it out on quite weak people which represents his character as a bully he could also be a prime suspect of being the villan being the type of person who only really cares about themselves also this can realte to the film “jennifers body” as she is represented as the girl that people either love or hate and also has quite a high social status. In the opening sequence we also have a boy reading the newspaper and rolling a basketball around the table, this shows that he is a basketball player, and he loves basketball so much that he even takes it to detention, this is similar to John in the film John Tucker Must Die because he also loves basketball and we see John Tucker often with a basketball which creates imagery with association of being a basket ball player would show that he’s dedicated and focused, also the newspaper suggests that he takes interest in what is happening in the world. We where told that we had to take people out of the other media sixth form class and use them as our cast which was a benefit because we had the advantage to work with people that understood the purpose of our film and followed directions well and also because they were aware to how important our movie was to us as much as theirs was to them they gave 100% effort which was appreciated. We couldn’t take any other students from other year group out of lessons because exams were approaching. From the other media class we chose the people we thought would suit best with our characters.
Due to my role and being the director I informed our cast what they had to wear and if any problems to contact my so we can solve the problems especially for the mise en scene where I made sure we had three days before the filming day also I gave each cast a note with times and the location just in case they can’t find me or neither any of my group members this help because everyone showed up on time and knew what they were doing. The week before filming we arranged to have a rehearsal this is where I directed the cast on how they had to act in before the shooting of the film, and if they didn’t understand I would physically showed them how to act during the rehearsals alongside my two other group members, however we changed some minor parts of the film by the time it came to the shooting day, so we showed them how to act the role on set. During filming we faced some minor issues with our cast because we would tell them how to act however they would try to do it the way they thought was right but it didn’t look right on the camera, after this problem was reoccurring we decided that we should actually do the actions ourselves by taking the actors role and physically showing them how we wanted them to act. We also had an issue with the basketball player because we wanted him to wear a basketball uniform to make him look more like a basketball player for our film so we provided him with a rack sack and a Nike hoodie which made his character look more realistic, however before filming we checked to see if every cast was happy with their role and if not then tried our best to fix any problems we did this as we didn’t want our actors to feel uncomfortable at any point as we wanted them to enjoy actually making the film as well as doing the job.

Sunday 3 January 2010

Evaluation of openning sequence.

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? As a group of three our film opening sequence uses the forms and conventions of a real media product. My media product “Deadly sins” is based on the horror film and also due to research which included plot keywords e.g. thriller, blood and death.”Deadly sins” is based on a class of five student who are facing detention for various reason therefore each had committed a sin, the popular (girl)Bianca represents Vanity, the Goth( boy) represents Anger, the geek (girl) represents Jealousy, the class clown (boy) represents Selfishness and the basketball player (boy) represents Greed. Each character is killed one by one except for the geek girl, and at towards the end we realise that the unrelated incidents all lead to the geek girl were she actually helps to kill the students.

Our opening sequence involved the typical forms of a opening sequence as we start off by an establishing shot of the classroom and then grasping a sense of character one by one having individual shots of each character but not including any speech this was to tie in with the theme of thriller therefore we kept the first scene simple and clear to what is going on but still leaving the audience with questions. Throughout the opening sequence we used several hints which were similar to other horror/thriller movies we had researched.

The stereotypical themes include:
• Teen
• Danger
• Trauma
• Killing
• Dead body
Our film includes various conventions, one obvious convention we show within our opening sequence is when Bianca has a nose bleed and stands up and walks towards the door this is similar to the film “i know what you did last summer” because the killer wears a white mask which represents a hidden identity and our in film the blood represents death but is also a disguise due to the blood being a suttle clue but in contrast with “i know what you did last summer which is a quite drastic clue”. During walking towards the door we show a close up of her hand where she unconsciously wipes blood on the wall and leaves her hand print of blood this gives a sense of innocence and vulnerability. This also links to the theme of death which is shown later on in the movie. In “Deadly sins” we experience a range of killing which are uncalled for and most of the time never seems to make sense this is also common in other horrors and thrillers such as “Final destination” where a group of friends boards a plane to France on a school trip, when one character “Alex” has a vision that the plane they are boarding will explode he eventually convinces his friends not to board the flight and the plane does crash. Soon after though, the teens are stalked and killed by Death who is intent on collecting the souls of those who cheated it.

Throughout the films that I have chosen to compare horror/ thrillers that all include conventions of the which includes conventions of the unaware humble teen this compares to the film “sorority row” where a girl who is in love with her boyfriend is unaware that he hates her sorority sisters and eventually kills them one by one this relates to my film because both films share a similar storyline where a sequence of deaths occur but know one knows who the killer is which shows a equilibrium, disruption and a new equilibrium for instance my equilibrium would be the normal class room which lead to Bianca having a nose bleed which is the disruption and as the film continues the new equilibrium is the mysterious geek girl finally captured.
Also for mise on scene as a group discussed what the convention could help us to create a horror/thriller feeling this is represented in the film “Saw” where they use low key lighting in the opening sequence this created suspense, low key lighting is also identified within many other horror/thriller films which we used in our opening sequence where we showed the first shot of the flickering which adds importance to our idea of not being able to control what happens next.
Our media product develops the forms and conventions of real media products due to my research in horror films such as “Jennifer’s body” this is represented by the setting as we see the stereotypical American high school although our setting is in a stereotypical English secondary school the forms and conventions are the same.

We developed this idea by instead of having one main protagonist we had five main protagonists. Our media project challenges the forms and conventions due to my research where protagonist are normally the good idealistic person seen as the hero this is shown also in the film “saw” where five contestants signed up for a competition which included a cash reward with selfish intentions of winning but eventually down to two contestants figure out that if they had worked together they would have been able to win as a team.
For “deadly sins” we managed to develop this idea and make the protagonist individually belong to different social groups but still have one thing in common which is that they all have committed a sin. And towards the end we realise that their original sin links to why they end up in detention and end up dying. And also involved real media films by challenging the forms and conventions where we used the most unlikely character (the geek girl) to be the killer but also makes sense due to being smart, quiet and reserved.
